The Medical & Health Station
This building is a chalet where residents of the settlement used to live, also known as "Small House" in Chinese. The chalet is located in the central section and was built in 1936. It was designed as a "marriage quarter" for married couples affected by leprosy. Each unit has an area of approximately 3.5 meters by 5.5 meters and is a semi-detached chalet.
Through more than ten years of interaction and communication with the residents of the Valley of Hope, we have realized that in any community engagement projects, the needs of the local residents should always come first. This Medical & Health Station is a place where we gather the residents' needs and carry out programs related to their physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. These activities are designed based on their needs, so we strive to involve the residents in the transformation of public spaces and meet their spiritual needs as much as possible. We firmly believe that the key to promoting community engagement projects within the leprosy settlement lies in the participation of the residents, and we hope that this station can bring about community engagement and participation.
The opening ceremony of this station was held on 6th August 2022, and was officiated by Dr. Radhiah Mustafar, the Deputy Director of the National Leprosy Control Center, Mr. Tan Hing, the President of the Sungai Buloh Settlement Council, and Ms. Tan Ean Nee, the founder of the Care & Share Society. With the blessings and full support from the hospital, we have carried out various community activities specifically planned for the old folks, including monthly haircuts and hair dyeing sessions, body massage muscle and facial services, tea gatherings, handicraft workshops, and sketching classes. Since then, the physical and software development of this center has become more attuned to the needs of the residents, creating a more humane, supportive, and respectful living environment that embraces diverse values. The most touching core vision is the shared belief that this station possesses the power to spread happiness and health, and it can also bring together the residents, fostering unity and proactive development. After participating in various activities at this station, the residents have gradually developed a sense of belonging to themselves and the community, inspiring them to pursue a better and harmonious community life together.
