Title: The Council Hall

Title (Original Language): 参议会礼堂

Year: 2017

Words in the Drawing: “I am Tan Hing, the President of the Sungai Buloh Settlement Council. The building I painted is our Council Hall, a place where we often organise our community activities, such as performing arts activities, gathering, wedding banquets, birthday parties, anniversary celebrations of different associations, and so on. We always celebrate here. Our council office is located here too. At this moment, we have 10 Councilors in our organisation. Our office hours are from Monday through Friday, from 10 am to 4.30 pm. If our patients have any issues or concerns, they may come to the council to lodge complaints with us. We also have our monthly meeting to discuss those patient-related matters. Currently, the council is planning to turn the first floor of the Council Hall into The Valley of Hope Story Gallery and this gallery will be opened to the public in the near future. The life stories of the leprosy patients in the past and the history of this 87-year-old leprosy hospital will be disclosed here. If you have chance to pay a visit here, you will definitely have better understanding about our life stories. You are most welcomed to support us!”

Title: The Market

Title (Original Language): 菜房

Year: 2017

Words in the Drawing: “This is the place where fresh rations were distributed previously. The government used to implement free ration system. The inmate workers in charge would work at the market at 8 o’clock every morning.  Once the rations, such as chicken, fish, fruits, bread and so on were delivered to the market, the section attendants would then weigh, pack and distribute those rations to all the patients residing in the chalets. Each patient was entitled for free ration. I have been working as a section attendant for 20 years in the market. I used to distribute the rations from one chalet to another by motorcycle. However, this free ration system has been abolished since February 2011. Nowadays, our Government is paying each of us a daily food allowance of RM 21. ”

Words in the Drawing: “Jonny, was a gift from my friend who didn’t want to keep a pet dog. I have been keeping it for 8 years. Jonny has been very loyal and smart. Whenever there were strangers, it definitely barks at them. Jonny is very fierce and it helps to keep strangers away from my house. I feed Jonny with the dog biscuits and rice every day. My wife is the one who named it Jonny. My wife loves it very much. She bathes Jonny once a week. My painting was enhanced by my daughter-in-law with some gold powder. She said the entire painting is eye-catching with the shinning gold powder!”
